T20 World cup 2014: Yuvraj and Ashwin shine as India thrash Australia

India continued their dream run in the ICC World T20 as they pounded a listless Australia by a whopping 73-run margin to emerge group 2 champions with an all-win record.

Yuvraj (60) and Ashwin (4/11) laid the foundation for India's comfortable win as they bundled out Australia for 86 after making 159/7.

Australia won the toss and elected to field first. Put into bat, India scored 159 for seven with Yuvraj Singh showing glimpses of his destructive self with an innings of 60. On a slow track, Yuvraj initially struggled before blasting four sixes and five boundaries in a 43-ball knock.

Ravichandran Ashwin has been named the Man of the Match.

Australia were slogging absolutely each and everything and shockingly collapsed for a mere 86, their second lowest ever total in T20Is. They have nothing substantial to take back home and will now look to win their dead-rubber match against Bangladesh.

India are going through to the semifinals, playing 4, winning 4 and remain the only team to do so far.

Australia, meanwhile, lost both the Group 2 games they have played so far against Pakistan and West Indies, which put them out of the race for the semi-finals.

Unbeaten India qualify into WT20 semi-finals

India have qualified for the World Twenty20 semi-finals after defeating hosts Bangladesh by eight wickets with nine balls remaining in Dhaka.

India, who won the toss and elected to field, started strongly by dismissing Tamim Iqbal (6), Shamsur Rahman and Shakib Al Hasan (1) inside the first five overs. Bangladesh had been restricted to 138-7 in their 20 overs, leg-spinner Amit Mishra (3-26) again impressing. Anamul Haque (44) and Mahmudullah (33) offered the only real resistance.

Virat Kohli (57) and Rohit Sharma (56) shared in a second-wicket partnership of 100 to ensure a third successive Group Two win with nine balls to spare.

India never qualified for the semis in the last three editions of the tournament after winning it in 2007.

Sachin Tendulkar to watch F1 race in Bahrain

Cricketing legend Sachin Tendulkar will be in the visitors gallery to watch the Bahrain Grand Prix scheduled to be held next month April.

Bahrain's first-ever Formula One night race will be held at Bahrain International Circuit in Sakhir from April 4 to 6. Tendulkar, who retired from all forms of cricket last year, will travel to Manama with his family at the invitation of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Premier, reported Gulf Daily News.

Bahraini businessman Mohammed Dadabhai, who is close to Tendulkar, confirmed that the batting legend will be present to watch the first Formula 1 night race in Bahrain. "This is great news that will bring both Bahrain and India closer as the cricketing idol has accepted the invitation to visit Bahrain to attend this year's Formula One race," Dadabhai was quoted as saying Sunday.

"There is no doubt that Sachin Tendulkar, who is visiting with his family, will be one of the main attractions of this major event and we are happy that the most popular cricketer in the world is visiting Bahrain," he added.

Sachin Tendulkar unveils digital mosaic of himself

Japanese electronics major Toshiba paid tribute to Sachin Tendulkar by creating the world’s largest digital photo mosaic of the retired player, considered to be the largest of any cricketer.

Tendulkar himself unveiled the mosaic at a function. The company had started the campaign on social media earlier this year and the mosaic of Sachin Tendulkar adorned with the images of more than 17,000 fans was displayed on an 84 inch Toshiba 4k Ultra HD TV.

The photo mosaic is adapted from a painting by Viveek Sharma and the painting — titled eye of the tiger — draws a parallel between the tiger and the legendary cricketer for his strength, bravery and precision.
It is also a metaphorical reference depicting Tendulkar’s fiery attitude when it comes to cricket, according to Toshiba.

Sachin Tendulkar launches special silver coins in Mumbai

Legend cricketer Sachin Tendulkar launched special edition silver coins, with his face, name and signature embossed on them in Mumbai.

Valuemart Gold & Jewels and Diamond India will launch 15,921 coins, each coin signifying the number of runs scored by batting maestro scored in Tests during his glittering 24-year international career between 1989 and 2013.

The special edition coins would also have the batting icon’s name at the top, 200th Test match-2013 written below, where his face is engraved, and “ST” logo, as per the details in the invite issued for the launch function.

The coins, minted in 200gm silver, have been crafted by Switzerland-based precious metal refiner Valcambi SA.

Silver coins named after the legend are already available on the market. They weigh 20gm and 10gm, carry his photo and signature, but are without the figure of 200, signifying the number of Tests he had played before retiring in November last year.

Sachin Tendulkar with this honour would have been overwhelmed as he recently won the cricketer of the generation title by the Cricinfo.

Tendulkar during news conference after the release of the coins, said that he was fond of collecting coins in his childhood.

Sri Lanka clinch Asia Cup 2014

Sri Lanka claimed a brutally efficient five-wicket victory over efending champions Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2014 final in Dhaka on Saturday.

Going into the final with a perfect record throughout the competition, a five-wicket haul from Lasith Malinga and opener Lahiru Thirimanne's fluent century guided Sri Lanka to glory.

Sri Lanka were clinical as they restricted Pakistan to a modest 260-5 and then overhauled the target with 22 balls to spare to lift their fifth Asia Cup title. The last time they won the regional championship was in 2008.

Pakistan won the toss and Misbah-ul-Haq opted to bat first. Malinga pegged Pakistan back as he demolished the rival top order with his fierce pace and it was Fawad Alam's magnificent unbeaten 114 that guided to a respectable score.

Riding on the century of Thirimanne, Sri Lanka chased the total of 261 runs with an ease. Mahela, who was out of form, too contributed well with the bat and stitched a crucial partnership of 156 runs for the third wicket with Thirimanne to chase the target quite comfortably.

They have been the most consistent team throughout the tournament and their all-round quality shined through in this final.

Tendulkar more difficult to bowl to than Lara: Brett Lee

Former Australia fast bowler Brett Lee, who was in Mumbai on Tuesday, was drawn into the debate on Tendulkar and Lara's greatness.

Last week, South Africa all-rounder Jacques Kallis faced the same question and rated Lara as a better batsman than Tendulkar.

Asked to compare the two great batsmen, Lee said, "I have to say Sachin, because he has that aura when he comes out to bat."

"I have waged many a battle against him and was lucky enough to get him out more number of times than anyone else in the world. But I was also on the receiving end of many hundreds -- like the hundred (116) he got at Melbourne in 1999 and the many hundreds he has scored against us all around the world. When you play against Sachin you somehow (have to) find a way to give that little bit extra," said Lee.

"Interestingly Brett Lee is one of those fast bowlers who's had fair degree of success against India's legendary batsmen. Yet he picks Sachin. "There was some aura about him. I remember seeing him when I played my first test at MCG and I looked at him and was pinching myself if this was real. He was tiny and had a thick bat. I told to myself this is what dreams are made of. Its strange when you are playing against a man you have grown up seeing as a hero. I wanted my autograph book and get autograph and not bowl to him," Lee recalls.

"It's a huge opportunity and I had a lot of opportunities to play against him," added Lee.

Lee's assessment of Tendulkar was at variance with that of Kallis, who two days ago, was quoted as saying that Lara was the best batsman he has ever played against.

Kallis, one of the greatest all-rounders to have graced the game, however, described Tendulkar's achievements as incredible.

Sachin Tendulkar did not want to bat at number 4: Sourav Ganguly

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly revealed that Sachin Tendulkar was not too happy when he was asked to bat at number four in One-day internationals back in 2002-03.

“You say, please, do it for a short while; of course you’ll be back up, let’s see how long it goes. Once he settled down to the idea and saw it work, it was fine. When things went a bit wobbly at the 2003 World Cup, he was back up straight away,” Ganguly said.

In an article featured in ESPNcricinfo’s new anthology ‘Sachin Tendulkar: The Man Cricket Loved Back‘, Ganguly added that Sachin Tendulkar’s record as Indian captain is better than what people make it out to be.

“He led on some very tough tours – South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia – and it must be said he didn’t lose eight in a row. This when he didn’t have a very good team around him. The older players were fading and the newcomers were too raw.”

“When it came to being Sachin’s captain, it was about giving him due respect: treating him like a team-mate but also as the special player he was. He was central to the side doing well. He had to feel relaxed and comfortable,” Ganguly added.

While Sachin scored 2,059 runs from 61 innings with an average of 38.85 at number four in ODIs. He made 4 centuries and 8 half-centuries.

Other legendary cricketers like Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman also paid tributes to Tendulkar in the book.

Sachin Tendulkar begins work on his autobiography

Soon cricket fans around the world will come to know the story of Sachin Tendulkar from the man himself as the batting icon planning to write his biography, now he spends all his time with childrens.

"The work on it has started. If I give out the details of it, then who will read it? When the time is appropriate, I will let you know [more about it]," Tendulkar said during a Reynolds event in Chennai.

Tendulkar said writing is not something new to him as he was used to writing letters to parents and Anjali from tours before the cell-phone era. "When I started playing cricket, there were no mobile phones. So writing letters to my parents and later on to my wife Anjali became one of the ways to stay connected with near and dear ones," the Bharat Ratna awardee said.

Tendulkar's father was known name among Marathi writers and suggested that he wants his children to develop passion for writing. "Anjali and me would allow both Sara and Arjun to scribble on the walls when they were young."

"Writing, much like batting, needs ample practice, the right technique and execution," the batting maestro signed off.
