India on Wednesday started their ICC World Cup 2019 campaign with a thumping six-wicket win against South Africa at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. Rohit Sharma's century saw India through its victory. India began its innings with early blows, with the fall of wickets of Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan. However, Rahul-Sharma partnership helped India rebuild its innings, which was then taken forward by MS Dhoni.
As for the Indian bowlers, young Indian spinner Chahal, who was making his world cup debut, took four key wickets including that of South African captain Faf Du Plessis. Bumrah started India's bowling attack by taking down Hashim Amla and Quinton de Kock early.
Earlier South Africa had won the toss and chosen to bat first.
The defeat was South Africa's 3rd on the trot in the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019 whereas the Men in Blue start their campaign with a win. India will next play Australia on June 9.
