World Cup 2019, 1st Semi Finals: India Vs New Zealand

It's semi-final time, folks! India takes on New Zealand in the first semi-final of the ICC World Cup 2019 at Manchester. India have been in superlative form coming into the final, while the previous edition's finalists New Zealand have stuttered and stumbled their way to the semis.

India topped the group stage with just one defeat while their match against New Zealand in Nottingham was washed out. New Zealand, the tournament runners-up last time, grabbed the last semi-final berth after a hat-trick of defeats nearly derailed their strong start in the tournament.

Head to head stats

Overall: India and New Zealand have played in 101 ODIs and India lead 55-45 with one game being tied.

In World Cup: The Kiwi lead 4-3 in 7 World Cup matches with the last meeting between the two sides coming in the 2003 edition held in South Africa, Kenya and Zimbabwe.

In England: The Men in Blue have had a bad record playing against the Black Caps in England and lost all 3 games they played against them, the last of them being in the 1999 World Cup.

World Cup 2019, Pakistan scenarios to Semi finals

Here are the scenarios by which Pakistan can finish ahead of New Zealand for semi finals.

If Pakistan get to bat second against Bangladesh, they have zero chance of qualifying for semi-finals.

If Pakistan get the chance to bat first, they need to defeat Bangladesh by a margin of 300 runs.  If Pakistan score 300 then they need to bowl out Bangladesh for 0.

If Pakistan bat first and they make 400 then they need to dismiss Bangladesh for 84 runs and win by 316 runs in order to finish above New Zealand. One more scenario is, Pakistan bat first and dismiss opponent for 38 runs and win by 312 runs.

The possibility of these scenarios to become a reality are next to impossible, which means that practically Pakistan have no hope of qualifying for semi-final but mathematically it is still in the race.

World Cup 2019, India qualified for the semi final by beating Bangladesh

A brilliant hundred by Rohit Sharma – his fourth of the tournament – coupled with some fine bowling at the death by Jasprit Bumrah helped India to a 28-run win over Bangladesh in a hard-fought clash at Birmingham and with it secure a semi-final berth in the 2019 World Cup. Bangladesh knocked out of the tournament after the defeat on Tuesday.

India is the second team after Australia to qualify for the semis. It will be the 3rd successive semi-final appearance for India in World Cups. It's also the 7th time in 12 editions of the World Cup that India have reached the semis - 1983, 1987, 1996, 2003, 2011, 2015 being the other instances. Only Australia have played in more World Cup semi-finals.

Afghanistan, South Africa, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Bangladesh are now officially out of the semifinal race.

Here are semifinal qualifying scenarios

New Zealand:

New Zealand have 11 points from 8 matches. New Zealand needs to win its final league match against England to be assured of qualification.

England:

England have 10 points from 8 matches. Despite three defeats, qualification for the top four remains in England's hands. The host side has one match left; if it wins it, it's assured of qualification. A Pakistan victory against Bangladesh will knock England out if England loses to New Zealand in its final match.

Pakistan:

Pakistan has 9 points from 8 matches after the three-wicket win over Afghanistan. It needs 11 points to get into the last-four. If it wins its final league match against Bangladesh, it will end on 11 points. If England does not beat New Zealand, Sarfaraz Ahmed and Co. can go through.

The four semifinalists will be decided on the basis of points. If teams are tied in the standings, the number of wins, net run rate and the head-to-head record will come into play in that order.

World Cup 2019, India sets 315 runs target for Bangladesh

In today’s ICC cricket world cup 2019, India squandered a great opportunity as despite a solid 180-run opening stand they were restricted to 314/9 by Bangladesh at Edgbaston on Tuesday. Electing to bat Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave India a terrific start as India were hoping for a 350 pus total. But like in the previous occasions, India’s middle-order again failed to impress. Mustafizur Rahman was the start of the day for Bangladesh as he ended with a five-wicket haul.

Rohit Sharma slammed his fourth century of the tournament and became only the 2nd batsman after Sri Lankan batting legend Kumar Sangakkara to score 4 hundred in a single edition of the World Cup.

This is Rohit’s fifth World Cup century overall and he is now tied with legends like Ricky Ponting and Sangakkara in the second spot with only Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him with 6 World Cup tons.

Earlier, Indian skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Dinesh Karthik have replaced Kuldeep Yadav and Kedar Jadhav in the Indian squad. Bangladesh have also made two changes bringing in Rubel Hossain and Sabbir Rahman in place of Mehidy Hasan and Mahmudullah.

World Cup 2019: Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul set World Cup record

Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul gave India the perfect foundation in their World Cup 2019 match against Bangladesh at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The Indian openers broke a 4-year-old record set by Rohit and Shikhar Dhawan for the highest opening partnership for India in a World Cup match.

The duo also surpassed Jason Roy-Jonny Bairstow's 160-run opening stand to score the highest opening partnership at the ongoing World Cup.

Rohit Sharma and Shikhar had stitched a 174-run stand for the opening wicket in the 2015 World Cup match vs Ireland in Hamilton. India chased down 260 to win the match by 8 wickets.

This is also only the 4th time a 150-run stand has been stitched by India openers in World Cups. Ajay Jadeja and Sachin Tendulkar became the first pair in the 1996 World Cup while Sachin Tendulkar-Virender Sehwag did so in the 2003 World Cup and Rohit Sharma-Shikhar Dhawan achieved this feat in 2015 World Cup match.

Rohit became only the 2nd batsman after Sri Lankan batting legend Kumar Sangakkara to score 4 hundred in a single edition of the World Cup.

World Cup 2019: India win the toss and choose to bat

India, after tasting their first defeat of World Cup 2019, will take on Bangladesh at Edgbaston in Birmingham on Tuesday and will be eyeing to book a place in semi-finals with a win. Bangladesh, who have impressed everyone by punching above their weight in the World Cup 2019, can't afford to lose any of their two remaining matches. Bangladesh have seven points from seven matches and are currently seventh in the World Cup points table while India, with 11 points, are placed second.

India won the toss and elected to bat first at Edgbaston cricket ground in Birmingham. There are two changes for both sides as Dinesh Karthik and Bhuvneshwar Kumar come in for India while Shabbir Rahman and Rubel Hossain are brought into the Bangladesh side. India have dropped Kedar Jadhav and Kuldeep Yadav for this game. Bangladesh dropped Mehidy Hasan.

The Full Team Squads:

Do you know?

India has won the last four ODIs against Bangladesh. The teams have played each other three times at the World Cup so far with Bangladesh winning in 2007 followed by victories for India in 2011 and 2015. Bangladesh and India have met once before in an ODI at Edgbaston when India won by nine wickets in the 2017 Champions Trophy with big scores from Rohit Sharma and Kohli.

Last time, these 2 sides met in the World Cup, India thrashed Bangladesh by 109 runs at the MCG. They have only met each other on 2 other occasions at the sport's biggest stage - 2007 and 2011, with Bangladesh emerging winners in the former while also knocking out India in the league stage. In 2011 however, Virender Sehwag and Virat Kohli hit twin centuries to exact sweet revenge.

This will be the 1st time that the 2 sides will face each other in ODIs after the thrilling final of the Asia Cup in 2018 when India just managed to scrape past their opponents in a low-scoring game.
