Super Over

Super over method will be introduced in ICC Cricket World Cup 2011. This method was implemented in the Twenty 20 World Cup matches for the first time to get a result. ICC had decided to implement this method from the quarter final of the world cup 2011.

If the match ends with the scores tied and there must be a winner, the tie is broken with a one over per side or "Super Over". Each team nominates three batsmen and one bowler to play a one-over per side.

In turn, each side bats one over bowled by the one nominated opposition bowler, with their innings over if they lose two wickets before the over is completed. The side with the higher score from their Super Over wins.

So far in ODI cricket, if teams end up on level scores, it goes to the record books as a tied contest and the points are share in case it is a round-robin encounter.

And in case of knockout stages, the previous records of the team – run rate, head to head in previous rounds, win/loss record against other opponents in previous rounds - throughout the tournament are calculated.

One such example is the enthralling semifinal encounter between Australia and South Africa during the 1999 mega event when Alan Donald misjudged a single. Wasn't it a just result that having beaten South Africa earlier in the tournament, Australia moved into the final.

Sachin Tendulkar scores record fifth World Cup

Sachin Tendulkar reached another milestone as he became the highest century-maker in World Cup history by scoring his fifth hundred in the ICC mega tournament on 27th Feb, Sunday.

The 37-year-old Tendulkar reached the landmark during the group B clash against England when he glanced burly paceman Tim Bresnan for a boundary towards the fine leg region off the first delivery of the 35th over. It was his 47th ODI century and his 98th overall.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly, current Australia captain Ricky Ponting and his former teammate Mark Waugh have all scored four World Cup hundreds.

With Ganguly and Waugh retired, it is only Ponting who has a chance to match or surpass Tendulkar.

Sachin Tendulkar scored 120 runs from 115 balls and the knock was adorned with five 6's and ten 4's.

Playing his sixth World Cup, he also holds the records for most runs and most half-centuries in the ICC mega event. He has accumulated 1944 runs in 38 matches and has scored 13 fifties so far, followed by Ponting with 1577 runs in 41 matches.

Ganguly is the only other Indian who has managed to score more than one thousand runs in World Cup matches. He scored 1006 runs in 21 matches and stands 11th in the list of highest run scorers in World Cup.

Tamim Iqbal cleared after scan

Bangladesh openning batsman Tamim Iqbal, who took an amazing catch to turn around a thrilling World Cup match with Ireland, was taken to hospital on Saturday for a precautionary scan after injuring himself in making it.

The diving, low catch, which will live long in the memories of the packed Dhaka crowd who witnessed it, removed danger man Niall O'Brien and helped Bangladesh on their way to a 27-run win in Group B on Friday.

He was named man of the match for the catch and his earlier quickfire 44 from 43 balls in Bangladesh's 205 all out.

Tamim had surgery on his left hand last September which forced him to miss the home series against New Zealand the following month.

Bangladesh will face West Indies in their third Group B match on 4th March at Dhaka.

Dwayne Bravo out of the World Cup with knee injury

West Indies all-rounder Dwayne Bravo has been ruled out of the tournament after suffering a knee injury in Thursday's opening game defeat against South Africa at the Ferozshah Kotla, Delhi. Bravo attempted to field on his bowling follow through when he fell, after awkwardly twisting his knee. He took no further part in the match. Medical examination on Friday revealed he had suffered a serious injury.

"Unfortunately, he has suffered damage to his knee ligaments. The initial assessment is that he will out for a minimum of four weeks," West Indies media manager Philip Spooner told.

The replacement will be announced once the International Cricket Council gives its okay. Bravo was one of the few real quality players in the struggling Caribbean squad. His injury makes life even more difficult for the team. West Indies take on Netherlands in their next game at Ferozshah Kotla on Monday.

Bollinger ruled out of World Cup with ankle injury

Australia's injury worries have worsened with Doug Bollinger to be sent home from the World Cup due to an ankle injury that may require surgery.

The Australians came to India already missing Michael Hussey, Nathan Hauritz, Ryan Harris, Clint McKay, Xavier Doherty and Shaun Marsh due to injuries, but Bollinger is the first member of the squad to be flown home in middle of the tournament.

Bollinger suffered pain in his left ankle during the first warm-up match against India and although the soreness eased and he was available for Monday's match against Zimbabwe, the problem intensified when the team arrived in Nagpur.

Peter Siddle would be the logical replacement for Bollinger, but the selectors have not yet decided on who should join the squad.

The ICC has also confirmed that withdrawn players can return to replace other injured men, meaning the door has been opened for Michael Hussey to make a potential dash to the World Cup.

However, the Australians would most likely prefer a backup fast bowler to replace Bollinger, with John Hastings the only reserve seamer in the touring party.

The selectors will decide which player will join them over the next few days.

Sachin Tendulkar smashes sixes batting left-handed

Sachin Tendulkar practise with lefthand

He has spent more than two decades in world cricket but not many would know that Sachin Tendulkar is ambidextrous. Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar surprised everyone when he opted to bat left handed during the team's practice session at the M Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore on 23rd Feb, Wednesday.

Tendulkar grabbed everyone's attention by choosing to bat left-handed with a few of his teammates and local bowlers bowling at him. He also did not wear gloves, while all other batsmen, who faced two deliveries each, wore their cricketing gears. Tendulkar sent the very first delivery he faced over the ropes before stepping out to hoist another six sixes, missing only one out of eight deliveries.

The Indian cricket team, which has been camping in Bangalore for their crucial Group 'B' league match against England on Sunday, had a rigorous batting session at the National Cricket Academy before shifting to the stadium.

Besides the rigorous batting session, the team also went through a brief 10-minute catching practice session.

Ricky Ponting faces ICC charge

Australia captain Ricky Ponting will be charged for allegedly damaging a television set in the dressing room after being run out for 28 runs as Australia began the World Cup with a 91-run win over Zimbabwe in Ahmedabad on 21st February.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) acted after receiving a report from the Indian Cricket Board.

The report relating to the alleged incident was sent to the Indian Cricket Board by the Gujarat Cricket Association, which oversees the sport in Ahmedabad.

"Ponting did throw his gloves at the television. You can't see any damage from outside but when you switch it on, there is no picture on three-fourths of the screen," said Gujarat Cricket Association secretary Rajesh Patel.

The ICC spokesman said the governing body would wait until the Australian team arrived in Nagpur on Wednesday for Friday's match against New Zealand before informing Ponting.

"We need to talk to him... because we don't know what he's going to say to it," added the spokesman.

Hosts to play quarter-final matches at home

The 10th World Cup hosts India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh will play their knock-out matches at home if they get past the preliminary rounds in the World Cup, the governing body confirmed.

But if two host countries draw each other, the team placed higher in the pre-tournament seeding will get preference, International Cricket Council chief executive Haroon Lorgat said in Dhaka on 18th Feb, 2011 ahead of Saturday's opening match between India and Bangladesh in Dhaka.

It means India, seeded higher than both Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, will play the entire knock-out stage on home soil if they get that far. This means the original match schedule where specific quarter-final games were slotted will change - depending on where the hosts finish.

According to the schedule, the second quarter-final in the Indian city of Ahmedabad on March 24 was to feature the third-placed team in group B against the second team in group A.

But even if India do not finish third in group B, they will still play in Ahmedabad against a side which will not know their venue till the last league match ends on March 20.

According to the fixtures, the quarter-final line-up is A1 v B4, A2 v B3, A3 v B2 and A4 v B1 - so if India finish second, they will take on the third-placed team from group A.

If Sri Lanka are drawn against India, they will travel to Ahmedabad. Otherwise they will play their quarter-final in Colombo on March 26.

Bangladesh will play their quarter-final at Dhaka on either March 23 or March 25 if they qualify provided they are not drawn against either India or Sri Lanka.

The host country rule will also apply for the semi-finals in Colombo on March 29 and Mohali on March 30.
It made it easier for fans to make travel plans, knowing where their respective teams would play.

Very Very Special Laxman's profile

Vangipurappu Vekata Sai Laxman, popularly known as V.V.S. (Very Very Special) Laxman by his fans, is an Indian Cricket player. He was born on 1st November, 1974, in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India.

Laxman is a star cricketer and great batsman of India. He is a right handed middle order batsman and sometimes bowls off spin.

Apart from the Indian Test and One Day International Cricket teams, he has represented Hyderabad and Lancashire teams and captained the Deccan Charges team in the IPL Twenty-20 tournament 2008.

He studied Medical Science for a short period of time but quit it later to play professional Cricket in a full fledged way. He received his preliminary education at Little Flower High School, Hyderabad.

Laxman
with his wife
Gudipati RaghavaSailaja
His father and mother both are doctors. He married to Gudipati Raghava Sailaja. They have a son and a daughter.

Laxman is a right handed batsman and is famous for hitting spin bowlers mercilessly and maneuvering the ball with ample use of his wrists to the desired corner of the ground. Interestingly, Laxman has delivered his best performance for a maximum number of times against the Australian Cricket team both in Test and ODI matches.

The beginning of Laxman’s Test Cricket career was made in the year 1996 with a Test match against South Africa played at Ahmedabad.

His innings of 281 against Australia in 2001 was ranked sixth in Wisden's list of 100 great Test innings in history

Interestingly he made his debut in One Day International (ODI) Cricket with a duck (zero score) in a match against Zimbabwe in the year 1998, and finished his ODI career again with a duck in a match against South Africa in the year 2006.

In his One Day International (ODI) Cricket career, Laxman played 86 matches and scored a total of 2338 runs including 6 centuries and 10 half-centuries. His ODI Batting Average was 30.76 runs, with the highest score being 131 runs.

He has played over hundred tests for India during his cricket career, but unfortunately he didn’t play cricket in Cricket World Cup 2011.
